The site that became Ellicott City was first known as Ellicott Mills, named for three Quaker brothers and the gristmill they established. One of the brothers, Andrew Ellicott, and Benjamin Banneker, a free African American born in the area in 1731, were commissioned by George Washington to survey and lay out Washington, D.C. Banneker is said to have successfully reproduced from memory plans originally designed by Pierre L'Enfant, who was dismissed from the project.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes.
