Thankfully, a robust transit system links New York to many amazing destinations with a short (and often scenic) drive. 1. Beacon, New York

Some of the best weekend trip ideas from New York involve small towns easily accessible by public transit. Boasting excellent hiking, thought-provoking artwork and even an abandoned castle, Beacon makes for a great weekend trip. Strolls along Main Street are always pleasant, especially when punctuated by stops at the area's finest breweries. Locations offering cheese, chocolate and upscale cuisine can also be expected.

Recommended accommodations. Although widely regarded as a day trip destination, Beacon offers enough to keep visitors busy for a full weekend, along with comfortable accommodations. The Roundhouse At Beacon Falls occupies a historic mill complex and provides lovely waterfall views. Additional accommodations can be found in the nearby town of Fishkill, including budget-friendly rooms at the Comfort Inn & Suites.

Suggested activities:

Bannerman Castle. Originally built as an arsenal, Bannerman Castle once stored ammunition but is now the go-to attraction for adventurous types, who are fascinated by the arsenal's history and its crumbling ruins. Cruises, walking tours and even kayak expeditions are available, offering many ways to discover the intriguing story behind this mesmerizing structure.

Dia Beacon. Easily accessible by train, this expansive art museum contains many contemporary pieces that are difficult to forget. The structure in which the museum is housed is equally fascinating: a former Nabisco box factory.

2. Manchester, Vermont

Head to the Green Mountains for a quaint getaway, complete with hiking, historic homes and a quintessential Vermont experience. Manchester is gorgeous any time of year but truly shines during the autumn months, when fall foliage brings stunning colors to the surrounding countryside. It’s nearly a four hour drive, but the serenity and abundance of recreational options make this amazing town a favorite among city folks.

3. Atlantic City, New Jersey

Glitzy, gaudy and wonderfully over the top, Atlantic City is unapologetically bold and brash — and this makes it extra appealing to many New Yorkers. This iconic destination promises an upbeat getaway, complete with boardwalk adventures and casino-based excitement.

Recommended accommodations: Few places capture the quintessential Atlantic City experience quite like the Ocean Casino Resort, which is a major nightlife destination. Caesars Atlantic City is also iconic, boasting numerous statues, live entertainment and an expansive pool.
