Tomah is the crossroads for west-central Wisconsin, midway between Minnesota's Twin Cities and Milwaukee, and is where I-90/I-94 separates into two distinct highways. In the spring of 1856, Robert E. Gillett and his son, Robert A. Gillett, began planning the city they were to lay out on this site. Legend had it that years before the great Indian Chief Tomah had built a council house near the creek, and the Menomonee and the Winnebago had met there in peace. The Gilletts decided to name the town after this man of strong character and high ideals.

NATIONAL PARKChequamegon Nicolet National Forest In north-central and northeastern Wisconsin, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest comprises 1.5 million acres in four separate regions. The Chequamegon (she-Wa-ma-gon) area covers 856,938 acres east, south and northwest of Park Falls on SRs 182 and 13; the Nicolet (nik-oh-LAY) area totals 661,200 acres east of Rhinelander and is accessible via several major highways.
NATIONAL PARKEffigy Mounds National Monument Three miles north of Marquette on SR 76, Effigy Mounds National Monument extends 3 miles along the bluffs of the Mississippi River and covers 2,526 acres. The Yellow River divides the tract into two sections. The 206 mounds, some built in the shape of animals and birds, contain the remains of a Native American society that lived in this region between 1,000 and 2,500 years ago. At the visitor center a video and museum explain the history of the mounds.

According to one Native American legend, the quarry site was discovered by a woman who followed a white bison to a spot where its hooves turned the rocks red.
NATIONAL PARKSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore lies along 35 miles of the Lower Peninsula's northwestern shore and includes the Manitou Islands. The name is derived from an Ojibway Indian legend that tells of a bear and her two cubs forced to swim across Lake Michigan to escape a forest fire. The mother reached the shore safely and climbed to the top of a dune to await the cubs that lagged behind and never arrived. She still maintains her vigil in the form of a dark hill of sand atop a plateau, while the errant cubs have become the North and South Manitou islands.
