From humble origins in a mountain field in 1947, Ruidoso Downs Race Track—also the site of the Racehorse Hall of Fame—is a premier facility for quarter horse and Thoroughbred racing. The All-American Futurity is held on Labor Day, the final day of the racing season. Famed as the world's richest quarter horse race (the purse exceeds $3 million), it is the final leg of quarter horse racing's Triple Crown. NATIONAL PARKCapulin Volcano National Monument Three miles north of US 64/87 and Capulin on SR 325, Capulin Volcano National Monument contains one of the best examples of a volcanic cinder cone in the nation. About 60,000 years ago ash, cinders and lava erupted and formed a classic cinder cone that stands more than 1,000 feet above the surrounding prairie. Today, a 2-mile road winds up the volcano, and five trails lead into the crater and around the rim. The view from the summit includes the Rocky Mountains, volcanic features of the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, and the distant horizons of Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.
