On the north shore of Lake Superior, 320 kilometres (199 mi.) northeast of Thunder Bay, Pukaskwa (PUCK-a-saw) National Park encompasses 1,878 square kilometres (725 sq. mi.). The park is mostly wilderness that is accessible only by canoe, boat or trail. The entrance at Hattie Cove in the northwestern corner of the park can be reached via Hwy. 627, which extends from Hwy. 17 south and east of the town of Marathon.

NATIONAL PARKChequamegon Nicolet National Forest In north-central and northeastern Wisconsin, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest comprises 1.5 million acres in four separate regions. The Chequamegon (she-Wa-ma-gon) area covers 856,938 acres east, south and northwest of Park Falls on SRs 182 and 13; the Nicolet (nik-oh-LAY) area totals 661,200 acres east of Rhinelander and is accessible via several major highways.
NATIONAL PARKGrand Portage National Monument A half-mile from the village of Grand Portage off SR 61, the scenic historical site of Grand Portage National Monument embraces the stockade and the 8.5-mile portage—a foot path used to carry boats and supplies from Lake Superior to the Pigeon River—followed by the voyageurs to Fort Charlotte and the boundary waters separating Canada and Minnesota. The Grand Portage was the fur trade's linchpin—through this portage passed all the trade goods from Montréal and furs from the Canadian Northwest.

NATIONAL PARKSleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore lies along 35 miles of the Lower Peninsula's northwestern shore and includes the Manitou Islands. The name is derived from an Ojibway Indian legend that tells of a bear and her two cubs forced to swim across Lake Michigan to escape a forest fire. The mother reached the shore safely and climbed to the top of a dune to await the cubs that lagged behind and never arrived. She still maintains her vigil in the form of a dark hill of sand atop a plateau, while the errant cubs have become the North and South Manitou islands.
