Historic Natural Bridge, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, is home to the “rock bridge” (the county's namesake) and adjacent to George Washington and Jefferson National Forests. Natural Bridge became a retreat when Thomas Jefferson built a two-room log cabin for guests. By the 19th century, the railway dropped off thousands of people at Natural Bridge station for a mountain respite, during which they would view the renowned rock bridge that Jefferson called “the most sublime of nature's works.” The site is now known as Natural Bridge State Park.

NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. Ninety miles of the Big South Fork River and its tributaries tumble through gorges carved over millions of years in the sandstone of the Cumberland Plateau. A few villages are scattered along the Outer Banks Scenic Byway, providing easy stopover points for food, lodging and cultural heritage. Bottlenose dolphins can often be seen close to shore, shorebirds and waterfowl abound, and seashell hunters will find a good variety. The sand is soft and deep at times.
