In 1911 Morehead furnished the locale for the first of Cora Wilson Stewart's “moonlight schools.” A forerunner of modern adult education, these schools enrolled students from 18 to 86, held classes on moonlit nights, taught the basics—reading and writing—and within 2 years largely eliminated illiteracy in eastern Kentucky.
