When the Great Northern Railway was being built through the Dakota Territory in 1887, a bridge was needed to cross a dry streambed. A large tent city sprang up at the site, but when residents learned that the railroad had chosen a town site several miles away on the Souris River, they moved the entire town to the present site of Minot (MY-not) overnight. The speed of this accomplishment and the growth of the population to 5,000 in the settlement's first year earned it the title “Magic City.”

NATIONAL PARKFort Union Trading Post National Historic Site Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, reached via US 2 and SR 1804, is 25 miles southwest of Williston, N.D., and 24 miles northeast of Sidney, Mont. Founded by John Jacob Astor for his American Fur Co. in 1828, the trading post became the center for the fur trade on the Upper Missouri River. NATIONAL PARKRiding Mountain National Park During the Depression of the 1930s, the Depression Relief Program created jobs for the unemployed, 1,200 of whom were put to work constructing buildings for the park 1934-35. As is the case with much of the architecture found in the country's national parks, the style widely used was a rustic design that incorporated local materials. Perhaps the most eye-catching of their projects here is the East Gate Complex on Hwy. 19, which includes a registration building, two staff buildings and an overhead entrance sign.
