What to Do in Kayenta

Kayenta grew from a trading post that John Wetherill established in 1910. He first called it Oljeto, but eventually changed the name to Kayenta after a deep spring nearby. The area's uranium and coal deposits are important in the town's economy. Scenic US 163, beginning at US 160, passes through Kayenta before running 22 miles north to the Utah border and the entrance to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park.
