Among the many groups of Europeans who settled the Upper Peninsula during the mid-1800s copper boom were Finnish farmers and Cornish miners. Traces of their influence remain. A pasty, the meat pie that often was the lunch of the tough Cornish miners, can still be found. Finlandia University (originally called Suomi College) was founded in 1896 and is the only college in the country founded by Americans of Finnish descent.
