What to Do in Gloucester

Gloucester (GLOSS-ter), in Tidewater Virginia, is noted for its many historical landmarks that have remained undisturbed. The 1766 Courthouse, on the Court Green, is enclosed by a brick wall. The Old Debtors Prison dates from the mid-18th century. Several old estates are in this region near Gloucester and near White Marsh. Long Bridge Ordinary, a stagecoach tavern built in 1732, is open during Garden Week in late April. Dr. Walter Reed, instrumental in the eradication of yellow fever, was born in nearby Belroi.
