Fort Frances, in northwestern Ontario opposite International Falls, Minn., is a busy border-crossing town. On the shores of Rainy Lake and Rainy River, it was originally established as Fort St. Pierre by Pierre de La Verendrye in 1731. The town is named after Lady Frances Simpson, who traveled with her husband Sir George Simpson, governor of the Hudson's Bay Co., on a trip to the settlement in 1830.

NATIONAL PARKChequamegon Nicolet National Forest In north-central and northeastern Wisconsin, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest comprises 1.5 million acres in four separate regions. The Chequamegon (she-Wa-ma-gon) area covers 856,938 acres east, south and northwest of Park Falls on SRs 182 and 13; the Nicolet (nik-oh-LAY) area totals 661,200 acres east of Rhinelander and is accessible via several major highways.

NATIONAL PARKGrand Portage National Monument A half-mile from the village of Grand Portage off SR 61, the scenic historical site of Grand Portage National Monument embraces the stockade and the 8.5-mile portage—a foot path used to carry boats and supplies from Lake Superior to the Pigeon River—followed by the voyageurs to Fort Charlotte and the boundary waters separating Canada and Minnesota. The Grand Portage was the fur trade's linchpin—through this portage passed all the trade goods from Montréal and furs from the Canadian Northwest.
NATIONAL PARKIsle Royale National Park Northwest of the Upper Peninsula, Isle Royale is the largest island in Lake Superior. Dedicated as a national park in 1940, the main island is about 45 miles long and 8.5 miles across at the widest point. The park boundary extends 4.5 miles offshore. A rugged coastline and numerous crags and ridges add to the park's beauty; 99 percent of the island is wilderness.
