NATIONAL PARKAllegheny National Forest Allegheny National Forest extends 40 miles south from the New York-Pennsylvania border through the counties of Warren, Forest, Elk and McKean. The only national forest in Pennsylvania, its approximately 517,000 acres include 500 miles of fishing streams, 272 miles of hiking and cross-country ski trails, 300 miles of snowmobile trails and 108 miles of trail-bike and ATV routes. NATIONAL PARKFort Necessity National Battlefield Eleven miles east of Uniontown on US 40, Fort Necessity National Battlefield surrounds a reconstruction of the fort built by George Washington in 1754. The Battle of Fort Necessity, in which Washington led the Colonial Virginia Regiment alongside the British regulars from South Carolina against a strong force of French and Native Americans, occurred at the site on July 3, 1754. This was Washington's first major event in his military career and it marked the beginning of the French and Indian War.Fort Necessity National Battlefield
NATIONAL PARKFort Stanwix National Monument Off SR 26 at 100 N. James St. in Rome, Fort Stanwix was built during the French and Indian War. In 1776, at the outbreak of the Revolution, the fort was repaired and restored by American rebels. Attacked by a force of British, Tories and Native Americans in 1777, it withstood a 3-week siege. The fort contains exhibits. Costumed interpreters re-enact 18th-century life in a military outpost. Museum open daily 9-5, Apr.-Dec.; Wed.-Sun. 9-5, rest of year. Fortress open daily 9:15-4:45.
