In the late 1800s Elk City was a rest stop for cattlemen driving herds along the Great Western Trail from Texas to Kansas. Oil was discovered in 1947, and the “black gold” flowed until reserves were depleted in the late 1960s. Interests then turned to deep gas exploration in Elk City and the surrounding Anadarko Basin. The town is on historic Route 66.

NATIONAL PARKCapulin Volcano National Monument Three miles north of US 64/87 and Capulin on SR 325, Capulin Volcano National Monument contains one of the best examples of a volcanic cinder cone in the nation. About 60,000 years ago ash, cinders and lava erupted and formed a classic cinder cone that stands more than 1,000 feet above the surrounding prairie. Today, a 2-mile road winds up the volcano, and five trails lead into the crater and around the rim. The view from the summit includes the Rocky Mountains, volcanic features of the Raton-Clayton Volcanic Field, and the distant horizons of Colorado, Oklahoma and Texas.
