Coulee Dam, as well as the adjacent communities of Electric City, Elmer City and Grand Coulee, sprang from the desert in 1933 to house laborers building the Grand Coulee Dam. The project, which was completed in 1942, employed more than 8,000 workers. The dam was built on the site of Seaton's Ferry, a remote Columbia River crossing; the ferry operated from 1920 to 1934.
