On the easternmost point of North America, Cape Spear Lighthouse National Historic Site is known for its lighthouse on a rocky cliff 75 metres (245 ft.) above sea level. The 1836 structure is one of Newfoundland and Labrador's oldest surviving lighthouses. For more than a century it has served as an important approach light to St. John's, 11 kilometres (7 mi.) to the north. During World War II a coastal defense battery at Cape Spear protected St. John's from Nazi submarines.

NATIONAL PARKCastle Hill National Historic Site At Placentia off Hwy. 100, Castle Hill dates from the 17th century when the French selected the small fishing village of Plaisance as the base of operations for their Newfoundland and Labrador fishing fleet. The Royal Colony of Plaisance was founded at this site in 1662 during the reign of Louis XIV.

NATIONAL PARKSignal Hill National Historic Site Reached from Duckworth St., Signal Hill rises 160 metres (525 ft.) above the narrow approach to St. John's harbor. Because of its strategic location, the area was the site of many battles between the English and the French for control of Newfoundland and Labrador and its fisheries. The British defeated the French in 1762 in the last battle between the two countries in North America.
NATIONAL PARKTerra Nova National Park Seventy kilometres (45 mi.) south of Gander and 240 kilometres (150 mi.) north of St. John's on Hwy. 1, Terra Nova National Park is characterized by bold headlands extending from a rocky, mostly forested interior. Covering more than 400 square kilometres (155 sq. mi.) of the island of Newfoundland's eastern shore, the park is bounded on the south by Clode Sound, bisected by Newman Sound and touched on its northern edge by Alexander Bay.
