Located on the island of Maui, Haleakalā National Park maintains three wilderness cabins for visitor use-- Hōlua, Palikū, and Kapalaoa. All cabins are accessible only by trail from the summit area and require you to hike a minimum of 3.7 mi (5.9 km).
Wilderness cabins are open year-round. Sites may be closed for routine maintenance or resource protection. Closures are displayed on rec.gov.
Cabins are located inside Haleakalā crater and involve a strenuous hike around distinctive cinder cones. Campers should prepare for hot, sunny, cold, wet, and windy conditions as weather can change rapidly. There is no shade or water on the crater floor, and temperatures can vary from 40-70 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 30-50 degrees Fahrenheit at night, so pack plenty of water, sunscreen, and layers. If it is stormy, winds can exceed 80 miles per hour with temperatures dropping well below freezing.

Kapalaoa, Palikū, and Hōlua cabins are located in designated Wilderness. To reach the cabins, you must hike a minimum of 3.7 miles (5.9km) to Hōlua, 5.5 miles (8.9km) to Kapalaoa, and 9.3 miles (15km) to Palikū. All sites are located in the crater of Haleakalā and are accessible from either the Halemauʻu Trailhead (10 minute drive from entrance to the park) or the Keoneheʻeheʻe Trailhead (30 minute drive from entrance to the park).
Entrance Fee - Per Vehicle
All park visitors are required to purchase a 3-day Entrance Pass at the Entrance Gate upon arrival to the park. A Wilderness cabin reservation does not cover your Entrance Pass. An automated entrance pass machine is available after hours.

Fee to reserve 1 Wilderness cabin for 1 night in the Haleakalā crater.
