POINT OF INTEREST

Zona Rosa

Mexico City, Central Mexico

This bohemian and LGBTQ+-friendly enclave is one of Mexico City’s top places to party. But singing karaoke and dancing until the early hours aren’t the only activities in this colorful barrio. It’s also home to Little Korea, full of restaurants and shops, fashionable boutiques, and some of CDMX’s best dining opportunities.

The basics

Parts of Zona Rosa spill out onto the bustling boulevard of Paseo de la Reforma, so it’s a great place to visit alongside attractions such as the Angel of Independence (Monumento a la Independencia). Zona Rosa is a staple of nightlife tours that give you the inside scoop on where to drink and dance in Mexico’s sprawling capital. Some street-food and bike tours also tend to swing by the neighborhood.

Things to know before you go

  • The neighborhood has its own shopping mall, Plaza la Rosa, with a food court and lots of retail stores.
  • Artists often gather to sell their pieces on the streets of Zona Rosa, so it’s an affordable place to buy artwork.
  • Look out for the Cocodrillo sculpture in Zona Rosa—one of the capital’s most popular public art pieces.

How to get there

To reach Zona Rosa, take the pink line number 1 to Insurgentes Station; exit at the plaza at the center of Glorieta de Insurgentes. Uber is popular in CDMX, so you can also use the rideshare app to get around.

When to get there

You can visit Zona Rosa anytime, but it’s at its liveliest after dark. It’s also the starting point for Mexico City’s gay pride parade, which typically takes place toward the end of June. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) in the fall is another festive time to visit. The neighborhood also hosts weekend markets.

Combine brews with books at Zona Rosa’s “cafebrerias”

Zona Rosa is home to many cafebrerias, a café and bookstore hybrid that’s the perfect place to sip coffee and get lost in a book. Some of the chicest include Clarice, famous for its freshly baked bread; the super-sleek La Increíble Libreria; and U-Tópicas, with a gallery that showcases feminist artwork.
