Yavapai Point
Grand Canyon Village, AZ
Yavapai Point, perched near the entrance of the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, offers unobstructed views of the canyon’s sweeping panoramas. The viewpoint overlooks Plateau Point, Bright Angel Canyon, and provides a rare view of the Colorado River far below. You can take in the scenery from the rocky point or the glass observation area inside the Yavapai Geology Museum.
Yavapai Point and the adjacent Yavapai Geology Museum are the first stop for Grand Canyon visitors looking to learn more about what formed the iconic landscape. The point is included on many tours of the Grand Canyon alongside other scenic overlooks, trails, and museums. Tour options include day trips from Las Vegas, sunset tours from Sedona, and a guided trek along the South Rim.
- Yavapai Point is the go-to spot for sightseers and geology enthusiasts.
- The glass observation room in the Yavapai Geology Museum provides views from a temperature controlled vantage point.
- Parking here is limited and vehicles over 22 feet (6.7 meters) are not permitted.
- The Yavapai Geology Museum is wheelchair accessible but the overlook itself is not.
Yavapai Point is 5 miles (8 kilometers) from the South Entrance Station and less than a mile from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center. You can reach the Grand Canyon by personal car or on a tour. Once inside the park it is recommended to park at the Grand Canyon Visitor Center and use the shuttle service or South Rim Trail to reach Yavapai Point.
Yavapai Point is open year round and the Yavapai Geology Museum is open from 8am to 6pm in winter and 8am to 8pm the rest of the year. Visit the center for information about ranger-led walks throughout the day. The point is a popular location for sunrise and sunset photos.
Historically known as the Yavapai Observation Station, the park was renamed the Yavapai Geology Museum in 2007. While it still offers panoramic views through large windows, its new focus is geology exhibits. You can learn about the formation of the Grand Canyon through three-dimensional topographical models, educational displays, and interactive exhibits. There is also a bookstore and gift shop inside.
