Voula Beach
Voula, Greece, 16673
Located a short tram ride from Athens’ main Syntagma Square, Voula Beach is a popular spot along the Athenian Riviera for a quick seaside getaway. A hassle-free way to enjoy the coast for a few hours, this long stretch of sand has numerous beach clubs offering services like umbrella and chair rentals, dining options, and places to hire water sports equipment.
The basics
Break up your sightseeing with a few hours of fun in the sun at Voula Beach, located in the southern suburbs of Athens along the city’s coastline. Check off the treasures of the Acropolis with a city tour on foot or by bike before relaxing along the waterfront, or spend the morning frolicking on the Saronic Gulf and opt for a sunset tour of Athens to avoid the midday heat and crowds. You can also stop at Voula Beach on your way to Cape Sounion to visit the Temple of Poseidon as part of a driving tour along the Athenian Riviera.
Things to know before you go
With its sandy beach, shallow water, and full range of services, Voula Beach is a great escape from the city for all ages.
Rent beach chairs and an umbrella at one of the many beach clubs that line the waterfront or spread out your beach towels beneath the free umbrellas in the public areas of the beach.
In addition to the beach club snack bars, Voula has a wide range of eateries from traditional tavernas to fusion restaurants.
The public beach in Voula is wheelchair-accessible and the nearby Voula Park has a paved promenade along the waterfront.
How to get there
Hop on tram 6 from Athens’ Syntagma Square and connect with tram 7 at the Pikrodafni station; the entire trip takes about an hour. Alternatively, join an Athenian Riviera driving tour that skirts the Attica coastline from Piraeus to Cape Sounion, with stops at highlights like Voula and the Temple of Poseidon along the way.
When to get there
Voula is one of the easiest beaches to access from downtown Athens, so it quickly fills with locals on summer weekends and holidays. Visit during the week to avoid the busiest times or skip the free public beach and spring for an umbrella and chair at one of the quieter beach clubs.
Top beach spots along the Athenian Riviera
The heat and bustle of Athens can be overwhelming and the Athenian Riviera can offer some welcome respite. Glyfada and Vouliagmeni aren’t the closest options, but both offer enough chic vibes to make the extra few minutes of travel worth it. For closer options, stick to nearby Piraeus where pretty (and family-friendly) beaches like Riviera, Votsalakia, and Edem are just minutes from downtown.
