Tokyo Sea Life Park
6 Chome-2-3 Rinkaicho, Edogawa, Tokyo, Kanto, 134-8587
Tokyo SEA LIFE® Park is the largest aquarium in the city. Housed in a glass dome in Kasai Rinkai Park, it sits across the bay from Tokyo Disneyland. As it’s government-run, the exhibits lean toward educational rather than “flashy,” but it's an affordable family-friendly attraction in the busy, often expensive capital of Japan.
The Basics
Tokyo SEA LIFE Park is divided into different sections: the deep sea, the Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Caribbean, and local Tokyo Bay aquatic life. There are Arctic and Antarctic habitats, a kelp forest, and a section for water birds, including penguins. Visit as part of a neighborhood bike tour and combine your visit with a stop at Kasai Rinkai Park, which has walking trails, a Ferris wheel, and a bird sanctuary.
Things to Know Before You Go
Visitors normally spend about a half-day exploring the aquarium.
Children under 12 can enter for free, and admission is free for all on Oct. 10 (the aquarium's anniversary day), May 4 (Greenery Day), and Oct. 1 (Tokyo Citizens' Day).
There is an on-site restaurant, but you can also take a picnic to enjoy in the park.
How to Get There
There is no parking lot at the aquarium, so it’s advisable to reach it via train. Take the JR Keiyo or Musashino lines to Kasai Rinkai Koen Station, from which it’s a short walk.
When to Get There
Aquarium shows are scheduled for the mornings, so this is an especially good time to go. The park is normally closed Wednesday, unless a public holiday falls on a Wednesday, in which case the aquarium is closed the following day.
Visit the Ueno Zoo
The Tokyo SEA LIFE Park may be the largest aquarium in Tokyo, but the Ueno Zoological Park houses the city’s oldest, dating from the 1880s. Located in the large urban park in the northern part of Tokyo, this zoo is especially famous for its gorillas and tigers. A whole day could be spent in Ueno Park, visiting the zoo, aquarium, the numerous museums, and other attractions.
