Taukkyan War Cemetery

Yangon - Pyay Road, Yangon, Myanmar

Thousands of Allied troops died in Myanmar—then called Burma—during two world wars, and Taukkyan War Cemetery is their serene memorial. With beautifully tended grounds and an imposing monument at the center, the Taukkyan War Cemetery is the largest of Myanmar’s Allied cemeteries and is easy to reach from Yangon.

The basics

Popular as a day trip from Yangon, Taukkyan War Cemetery is included on some tours from Yangon to Bago or Golden Rock. The cemetery includes graves from four battlefields, with a small number of WWI graves and several memorial areas. Within the Taukkyan War Cemetery, visit the Rangoon Memorial to unburied Commonwealth forces, see the Taukkyan Cremation Memorial, and pause at the Taukkyan Memorial to 46 soldiers whose graves have been lost.

Things to know before you go

  • Combine with a trip to Bago or Golden Rock to make the most of your travel time.
  • The main entrance to the memorial is wheelchair accessible with an attendant; wheelchairs can enter on the side of the building without assistance.
  • Some visitors have noticed biting insects in the morning and evening, so bring a bottle of repellent or plan to cover up.

How to get there

Taukkyan War Cemetery is located on Highway 1 in the township of Mingaladon, an hour-long drive from central Yangon. The easiest way to reach Taukkyan War Cemetery is by hiring a taxi—be sure to agree on how much time you’ll have there—but public transit is also available. To visit by bus, start at Aung Mingalar Bus Terminal; buses headed to Bago should pass Taukkyan but be sure to confirm with the driver before departure.

When to get there

Open daily from early morning until early evening, Taukkyan War Cemetery is especially tranquil in the morning. A lack of shade means morning or evening visits are more pleasant in hot weather, but it’s a lovely place to stroll at any time. On November 11th every year, the fallen soldiers are honored with Remembrance Day celebrations that fill the cemetery with poppies and other fresh flowers.

How to Find a Grave in Taukkyan War Cemetery

With thousands of graves in the Taukkyan War Cemetery, finding an important headstone takes some preparation. If you’re searching for a name, the Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintains a database that can be sorted by nationality, war, and service branch. There are more than 5,500 identified casualties at Taukkyan War Cemetery.
