Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas Park
Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei, BN1711
Sunset brings strolling families to Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas Park, a 25-acre (10.2-hectare) riverfront green space in Bandar Seri Begawan, with views of the Kampong Ayer water village and Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. It’s a great place to get a feel for local life whether you’re renting a 6-seat bicycle from on-site vendors, grazing nearby food stalls, or just catching an evening breeze off the water.
The basics
Its central location near other top sites means it's hard to miss Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas Park—many visitors end up passing through while exploring the surrounding area and waterfront. It’s also home to The Frame Brunei Darussalam, a famed photo spot that features an oversized frame where you can snap postcard-like images with the gold-domed Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque in the background. Food stalls cluster around the exterior of the park and there’s even some exercise equipment for a quick (and free) workout.
Things to know before you go
The park is great for families with kids, thanks to traffic-free areas to play and walk.
Shade is scarce at midday, so cover up with a hat and protective clothing.
Bring some local currency if you’re planning to rent a bike or get a bite to eat.
How to get there
Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas is located on the northern side of the Brunei River, just to the west of Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. You can enter the southern end of the park from Jalan Masjid Omar Ali Saifuddien road, which wraps along the riverfront. Additional entrances are located by the mosque and at the northern end of the park, where a bridge crosses the Kedayan River.
When to get there
Visit the park at 12pm and you might find it deserted; average daytime highs hover between 87°F (30°C) and 90°F (32°C) throughout the year, and locals tend to come out in the cooler sunset hours. Evening is a great time for taking in the sites, too, as nearby attractions are illuminated once the sun goes down.
Things to do in Brunei with kids
Young travelers will find a lot to explore in this pint-sized country, including wildlife-spotting cruises on the Brunei River, colorful rides at Jerudong Park Playground, and the easy-going walking trails of Tasek Lama Recreational Park. A short water taxi ride from Taman Mahkota Jubli Emas is the stilted village Kampong Ayer, a fun place for older kids to walk around—its wood-planked boardwalks are a bit uneven, so it’s a good idea to carry younger children.
