Stradun (Placa)
Stradun, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, 20000
Stretching from Old Town’s western entrance at the Pile Gate to the harbor in the east, the Stradun (or Placa) was once a shallow sea channel that divided the small island on which Dubrovnik was built from the Republic of Ragusa on the mainland. In the 12th century, the Stradun was filled to create the main street in Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
The Basics
The Stradun, the city’s busiest street, is home to a large number of tourist shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés. Also along or just off the Stradun stand all the major Dubrovnik Old Town attractions, including the Holy Savior Church, the Franciscan Monastery, and Sponza Palace. Most small-group and private walking tours of Dubrovnik start at the Pile Gate and walk down the famed limestone-paved pedestrian street, stopping at city landmarks along the way.
Things to Know Before You Go
The Stradun is a must for all first-time visitors to Dubrovnik.
Stop for lunch or a coffee in one of the Stradun’s many popular cafés and restaurants.
Most of the Stradun is flat and accessible to wheelchairs.
How to Get There
If you’re in Old Town Dubrovnik, you can’t miss the Stradun. Most Old Town streets lead to it, and if you plan to see any of the major sights, you will simply end up there. The Stradun, as well as all of Old Town Dubrovnik, is a pedestrian-only zone. For visitors staying outside of Old Town, you’ll need to park outside the city walls and then walk or take a bus into town.
When to Get There
The Stradun is busiest in July and August, especially when cruise ships are in port. Plan to arrive early to avoid the crowds, and check the cruise schedules when planning your visit. Old Town is small, so you’ll certainly have a more enjoyable visit if you avoid the ships.
