Stolzenfels Castle (Schloss Stolzenfels)

Schlossweg 11, Koblenz, Germany, 56075

First constructed in the 13th century and later rebuilt in 1823, Stolzenfels stands tall on a hill along the UNESCO-listed Upper Middle Rhine Valley—showcasing its crenellated towers, drawbridge, and defensive walls. See Stolzenfels, one of many castles along the river, on a boat Rhine tour or explore its renovated interior and gardens.

The Basics

The former residence of Prussian king Friedrich Wilhelm IV, Stolzenfels Castle shines bright among the verdant hills of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley. Visit this example of Rhine Romanticism, replete with opulent interiors and well-manicured gardens. The castle underwent an extensive renovation in 2011, and numerous artifacts and art are displayed inside, from historical paintings to suits of armor. Float by Stolzenfels Castle as part of a cruise, or visit from nearby Koblenz by bus or car.

How to Get There

Stolzenfels Castle is located just three miles (five kilometers) from Koblenz, a major hub along the Middle Rhine, and it's a highlight of various river cruise itineraries. When to Get There

The castle's hours vary by season, and in January and February, hours may be limited. Generally, the castle is open daily Tuesday- Saturday from midmorning to evening. The castle is closed in December and on Mondays. Last admission is 45 minutes prior to closing. For a lively experience, time your visit to the summer party held in early September, which includes special tours of various wings of the landmark.

The Castle Grounds

Don’t restrict your explorations to the main castle building. A recent renovation has revived the grounds of Stolzenfels Castle. It now boasts five individual garden areas, as well as waterfalls, ponds, architectural follies, and walking paths.
