POINT OF INTEREST

Stokesay Court

Onibury, Shropshire, SY7 9BD

With its stately Jacobean-style façade, magnificent oak furniture, and rolling parklands, Stokesay Court is a striking example of a late-Victorian English country estate. Best known as the setting of the 2007 film, Atonement, the estate is open to visitors who can admire locations such as the library, gardens, and outdoor fountain.

The basics

Despite serving as a military hospital during WWI and an evacuation center during WWII, Stokesay Court is now a private residence. The Oscar-winning film Atonement nudged the estate into the limelight and today it is open for tours that allow fans to walk in the footsteps of stars Keira Knightley and James McAvoy. Stokesay Court is also outstanding for its panoramic views over the South Shropshire countryside and technology that was well ahead of its time, including under-floor heating and electric light.

Things to know before you go

  • The property is only open for organized tours or events, so book in advance to visit.

  • Visits include a guided tour of the house and free time to explore the grounds, including the fountain, grotto, woodland walks, and a series of pools.

  • There is no café on the grounds, but many house tours include afternoon tea or evening drinks.

  • The house is wheelchair-accessible via ramps and dedicated routes; parts of the grounds are also accessible.

How to get there

Stokesay Court is located in Onibury in the Shropshire countryside, about midway between Shrewsbury and Worcester and can only be reached by car. Birmingham is the nearest city, about a 90-minute drive away, which connects to London Euston via high-speed train.

When to get there

The estate is open for guided tours only; a seasonal calendar of tours and events is published each season, so check the Stokesay Court website for updated information. House tours with tea are offered in the afternoon or with drinks later in the evening; longer tours beginning in the morning pair a visit to Stokesay Court with nearby Acton Scott Hall.

Other historic estates of Shropshire

The rolling Shropshire countryside has long been a retreat for England’s wealthy and the hills are dotted with exquisite manor houses and estates dating from the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition to Stokesay Court, architecture buffs can admire Attingham Park with its classical-style manor and landscaped parkland; the lavish Elizabethan Benthall House; Longner Hall built in the Regency style; and Cronkhill House, an Italianate villa.
