Stawamus Chief Provincial Park

Located on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territory of the Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish) Nation, the granite face of Stawamus Chief Mountain looks out over the waters of Howe Sound. The coastal rainforest smells of cedar and petrichor, and panoramic views of sea, sky, and forest await once you reach the top of the mountain.
Stawamus Chief Provincial Park is a classic example of British Columbia’s temperate rainforest, and it’s beloved by locals and visitors alike. As one of the largest granite monoliths in the world, climbers come to challenge themselves on its sheer face while hikers scramble up the trails on the back of the mountain. Both drive-in and walk-in campsites are located throughout the park, making it a perfect destination for outdoor lovers wanting to maximize their time in nature.
With three distinct peaks, summiting all three is a popular challenge for hikers in the area. The total hike is a round trip of 7 miles (11 kilometers) and should only be attempted by experienced hikers. The entire trip takes most people about 5–7 hours to complete.
The hiking trails throughout the park are all challenging, with a minimum elevation gain of more than 1,700 feet (540 meters).
Bring plenty of water and wear sturdy hiking boots.
Trail access is weather-dependent, so check advisories before setting off.
It’s an hour-long drive from Vancouver along the stunning Sea to Sky Highway (BC-99 N). The turnoff to the park is clearly marked, with paid parking available. If you don’t have your own vehicle, the Squamish Connector shuttle runs several times a day, departing from various locations in Downtown and West Vancouver and dropping passengers at the Squamish Adventure Centre or the Sea to Sky Gondola parking lot.
This park is hugely popular with locals, so skip the weekend rush and opt for a weekday trip. Try to arrive early to find parking and enjoy quieter trails. Visit from May to October for the best weather—the spring and fall tend to be more peaceful, with milder temperatures. If you plan to attempt all three peaks, start early!
If you’re not already a climber, a bouldering class is an excellent option for getting comfortable with some techniques and movements. The base of the Stawamus Chief is a popular spot for boulderers and plenty of outdoor outfitters in the town of Squamish offer classes for every level of experience.
