POINT OF INTEREST

Skeppsholmen

Skeppsholmen, Stockholm, SWE

"The Islet of Ships," as Skeppsholmen is called in Swedish, is really an emporium of museums. The smallest of Stockholm's islands, Skeppsholme lures savvy travelers away from the more famous Djurgården with a clutch of first-rate museums—the Moderna Museet and Östasiatiska Museet are among them. There's also a historic shipyard where traditional boats are still made.

The island connects to the mainland via the crowned Skeppsholmsbron Bridge—it's a 1-mile (1.5-kilometer) walk from central Stockholm and a pleasant place for a stroll. With a strategic position smack dab in the middle of the Stockholm harbor, the island is also on the itinerary of Stockholm Segway outings and some walking tours. Hop-on hop-off sightseeing cruises pass by on the way to Grona Lunds Tivoli and the Fotografiska Stockholm Museum.

  • Skeppsholmen is an ideal destination for walkers and spontaneous travelers as there’s no need for advance planning.

  • Accommodation ranges from a hostel on a sailing ship AF Chapman to contemporary eco-friendly hotels.

  • If you plan to explore the entire island, bring comfortable walking shoes as public transport is limited.

  • This area is known for its dining options, which range from Swedish-Mexican fusion eateries to elegant hotel restaurants.

Skeppsholmen is in Stockholm harbor between the Old Town (Gamla Stan) and Djurgården, with the city mainland to the north. The island is easily accessible by bus, foot, and ferry. Board ferries to Nybroplan, Slussen, or Djurgarden from Gamla Stan; walk the footbridge from Kungsträdgården; or take bus 65 from the city center.

As a park-island and walking area in central Stockholm, Skeppsholmen is free to visit and open 24/7. The island is best known for its museums, so visit from Tuesday to Sunday as museums traditionally close on Mondays. Otherwise, go when the weather is good for strolling around, typically from May to September in Stockholm.

While Skeppsholmen is called the “Islet of Ships," it could easily be called the “Islet of Museums.” When you visit, you can take your family to the Stockholm Toy Museum, see one of the most prominent collections of modern art at the Moderna Museet, or browse the archaeological collections from China, Japan, and Korea at the Museum of Far Eastern Antiquities.
