Seltún Geothermal Area
Seltún, Iceland, 241
Iceland is known for its incredible amount of geothermal activity, but many of the country's most magnificent hot springs are far from Reykjavik. This is not the case with the Seltún Geothermal Area on the Reykjane Peninsula, an easy drive from the capital city.
The basics
Located in the geothermally rich area of Krýsuvík near a Mid-Atlantic Ridge fissure, this magnificent area is characterized by a constant spray of hot, magma-heated water and steam. While it's too hot to enter the waters, you can view this active, sulfurous spring with a stroll down a wooden walkway. Plenty of private and group tours come to the Seltún Geothermal Area, and you can visit on an easy day trip from Reykjavik or as a stop on a more extended, multi-night tour.
Things to know before you go
Seltún Geothermal Area is a must-visit for travelers interested in science or natural wonders.
Stick to marked trails and walkways for your safety and the protection of the local ecosystem.
Many tours to the area involve hiking, so it’s a good idea to check with your guide about any accessibility concerns.
How to get there
Seltún Geothermal Area is about 40 minutes from Reykjavik by car, cia Road 42. Public transportation is limited, so it's easiest to either rent a car and drive yourself (onsite parking is available) or join a guided tour that includes transportation to just sit back and enjoy the scenery.
When to get there
The best time to visit the geothermal area is during the warmer months, particularly between May and September, though some people prefer to plan their trips to coincide with the winter Northern Lights. Note that summer is among the more crowded times to visit, so it's a good idea to book tours in advance to guarantee your spot.
Hot springs in Reykjavik
While the Seltún Geothermal Area is a sight to behold, it's not where you'd go for a hot spring soak. Fortunately, there are options right in the Reykjavik area. The best known is the Blue Lagoon, a massive complex on the outskirts of town, and the Sky Lagoon, a sleek complex with views out over the sea.
