Rossio Station (Estação do Rossio)

R. 1º de Dezembro 125, Lisbon, Portugal, 1249-970

At the heart of downtown Lisbon, Rossio Station (Estação do Rossio) is part transport hub and part architectural landmark. Built in the late 19th century, it is regarded as one of Europe’s most beautiful train stations thanks to its striking neo-Manueline facade and horseshoe-shaped arches. Trains run from here to UNESCO–listed Sintra, the city’s most popular day-trip destination.

The basics

You’ll take the train from Rossio Station if you’re visiting the nearby city of Sintra—celebrated for its Moorish castle and mountaintop palace—passing through the historic Rossio Tunnel en route. Architecture enthusiasts will also enjoy a visit to the station, and many art and architecture-themed tours of Lisbon include a stop at the landmark. Note the unique neo-Manueline and Romantic-style features, such as the ornately carved portals, the miniature turrets surrounding the clock tower, and the elaborate cast-iron interiors.

Things to know before you go

  • Several hotels, restaurants, and coffee shops are located within or directly opposite the station.

  • There are public restrooms at the station, but they are only accessible to ticket holders.

  • There are three low steps to enter the train station, meaning that assistance is required for wheelchair users.

How to get there

Rossio Station is located a short walk northwest of Praça Dom Pedro IV and can be reached on foot from many of Lisbon’s central sights. Take the metro to nearby Rossio station (green line) or Restauradores station (blue line). Alternatively, ride the famous Tram 28 to the Martim Moniz stop, about a 7-minute walk from the station.

When to get there

Trains to Sintra run daily about every 30 minutes, so you’ll rarely have to wait too long. If you’re visiting the station just to admire the architecture, it’s best to avoid the busy mid-morning to mid-afternoon period.

Architectural landmarks of Lisbon

Lisbon’s architectural highlights range from UNESCO–listed monuments to contemporary landmarks: Admire the Gothic-style Jeronimos Monastery (Mosteiro dos Jeronimos), the Moorish and Venetian Belém Tower (Torre de Belém), and the futuristic waterfront Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT). Close to Rossio Station, the 19th-century Santa Justa Elevator was designed by a student of Gustave Eiffel, while the nearby Alfama district is home to the grand Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) and the National Pantheon of Santa Engracia (Santa Egracia Panteao Nacional Lisbon).
