Set on the slopes of Spring Hill and designed by Colin Campbell—star of the popular Gardening Australia TV show—the 40-acre (16-hectare parklands provide sunny picnic patches, leafy walking trails, and subtropical gardens.
The basics
Visit the Roma Street Parkland to stroll scenic walking trails, admire the flower displays at the Spectacle Garden, or do as the locals do and make the most of the many barbecue areas. To learn more about the park’s exotic plants and wildlife such as the Easter Water Dragon, join one of the free guided tours or take a ride around the park on the Parkland Explorer mini-train. Additional highlights include the open-air amphitheater, which hosts regular concerts, movie screenings, and other events throughout the year; and the views over the city from The Lookout, which are most impressive at sunset.

How to get there
Roma Street Parkland is located in the Spring Hill neighbourhood, just north of downtown Brisbane. It’s easy to walk there from downtown, just a 15-minute stroll from the Queen Street Mall, or else hop on the train to Roma Street Parklands station. Parking is available along Parkland Crescent at the southern end of the park.
When to get there
The parklands fill up with locals on sunny days and there’s always something happening on summer weekends—arrive in the morning to run or cycle before the weather heats up, join a fitness class, or watch a free concert in the afternoon; then stick around to watch a movie at the open-air Moonlight Cinema.
Brisbane’s Parks and Gardens
Brisbane’s riverfront location and many parks and gardens mean there is plenty of greenery to be found within the city. Head to the City Botanic Gardens to stroll amid tropical plants and flowers; cross the river to explore the South Bank Parklands, where you can cool off with a swim at the Streets Beach Lagoon; or visit Victoria Park, the largest park in the city limits. Just west of the city, Mount Coot-tha provides hikers with a network of walking trails and is home to the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, while upstream, the popular Newstead Riverwalk starts out from the riverside Newstead Park.
