Revello de Toro Museum (Museo Revello de Toro)

Calle Afligidos 5, Malaga, Andalucia, 29015

As one of Spain’s most revered contemporary artists, Félix Revello de Toro has a museum devoted to his work in Málaga. The permanent display at Revello de Toro Museum includes more than 100 of the artist’s sketches, figurative work, and powerful portraits. Best known for his delicate depiction of the female form, highlights include family portraits and his most famous work, Sumida en el sueño (Deep Slumber).

The basics

Arranged in a typical Moorish style around an inner courtyard, the architecture of the Revello de Toro Museum is a beautiful work of art in and of itself, with flourishes such as the wooden stairway, which dates back to the building's construction, and Tuscan marble columns. In addition to the permanent collection, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions twice a year, in the spring and fall. Visitors can tour the museum with an audio guide on their own and can easily combine a visit here with other attractions in the area, including the Picasso Museum Málaga.

Things to know before you go

  • The museum is located in the historic workshop and home of Pedro de Mena, a 17th-century artist known for his religious sculptures.

  • There is a nominal admission fee.

  • Félix Revello de Toro’s famous painting, Sumida en el sueño, covers almost an entire wall. Displayed in a pitch-black room with lights illuminating it from above, it depicts a pale-skinned woman in a white nightdress sleeping on a bed covered with white sheets.

How to get there

Located in the city’s historical center, the Revello de Toro Museum is situated next to Málaga Park. It is within walking distance of many major attractions, including the Alcazaba and Picasso Museum Málaga, though several bus lines stop near the museum if you're traveling from further out. The city is also bike-friendly, and various rental options are available to those who prefer to get around on two wheels.

When to get there

The Revello de Toro Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, from mid-morning to evening, and Sundays and public holidays, from mid-morning to early afternoon. It is closed on Mondays. There is free admission on Sundays. Málaga experiences the most visitors during the summer months (June, July, and August) when the city experiences its hottest temperatures.

Learn more about Pedro de Mena

In addition to showcasing the work of Félix Revello de Toro, the museum also celebrates Pedro de Mena, a 17th-century sculptor known for his religious images. In the Memorial Room, visitors can learn about his achievements and art. There’s also an interactive display that shows where you can see some of his artwork in the city, including the Cathedral of Málaga.
