POINT OF INTEREST

Pipe Creek Vista

Grand Canyon National Park, AZ

With views stretching to the North Rim, bookended by Mather and Yaki points, Pipe Creek Vista is a premier overlook in Grand Canyon National Park. Take in the soaring Brahma Temple summit, sandstone O'Neill Butte, and picturesque Pipe Creek Canyon. Access the paved Canyon Rim Trail to walk west along the canyon’s rim to Mather Point or east to South Kaibab Trailhead.

The basics

Grand Canyon tours entering the park from the south generally stop at Pipe Creek Vista, the first scenic overlook along Route 64 east of South Entrance Road. Enjoy the view on a self-guided driving tour or via the park’s free shuttle that departs regularly from the Visitor Center Shuttle Bus Terminal. The Canyon Rim Trail is popular with walkers and cyclists of all ages and skills, and you can do it alone or on a guided excursion.

Things to know before you go

  • There are areas on the overlook with and without safety railings, so families visiting with small children should take extra care.
  • When visiting this open-air scenic overlook, dress for the weather and wear sunblock and a secured hat in summer.
  • Bring plenty of water if you plan on striking out along the Canyon Rim Trail.
  • The overlook and shuttle buses are both accessible to wheelchair users.

How to get there

Pipe Creek Vista is located along Arizona State Route 64 (or Desert View Drive), east of the junction with South Entrance Road. It can be accessed by private vehicle or using the free Kaibab/Rim (Orange) Route park shuttle bus. Set along the Canyon Rim Trail, this popular overlook can be reached on foot or by bike from the Grand Canyon Visitor Center.

When to get there

This easily accessible lookout point can get crowded with visitors in the busy midday hours, so stop here in the early morning or late afternoon to take in the view in relative peace. These hours also offer the best light for photography and milder temperatures for walking or cycling the nearby trail.

Flora and fauna from Pipe Creek Vista

Tear your eyes away from views of the North Rim long enough to take in two unique natural features of this scenic spot. Look directly below to spot the Douglas fir woods, a micro-habitat created by the cooler temperatures beneath the shade of the canyon walls. The cooler air creates thermals (air currents) that attract migrating birds in spring and fall, so scan the sky for soaring raptors and other species.
