Passengers docking at the Pan American Pier often take shore excursions with transportation to see Puerto Rico’s sites. Take a tour around historic Old San Juan to see its Spanish fort, colonial churches, and sunny plazas. Or, opt for a day trip to El Yunque Rainforest or a snorkeling excursion to nearby Culebra or Flamenco beaches. A tour and tasting at the Bacardi rum distillery or a Puerto Rican cooking class are also popular.
Things to know before you go
Old San Juan has uneven and sometimes slippery cobblestones, so wear sturdy shoes.
Many tours in Puerto Rico involve time spent outdoors; bring a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen.
Some areas of Old San Juan may be difficult to navigate for travelers using wheelchairs; check in advance.
How to get to San Diego from Port Pavilion on Broadway Pier
The Pan American Pier is on Isla Grande near the Isla Grande Airport and Puerto Rico Convention Center. It’s a 10- to 15-minute drive to Old San Juan, so you’ll want to take a taxi, cruise line shuttle, or guided tour.

Puerto Rico is a United States territory and has two official languages, Spanish and English. The currency is the US dollar, and you’ll find ATMs throughout Old San Juan. The terminal also has a duty-free liquor store.
