Obelisk (Obelisco de Buenos Aires)
Ave. 9 de Julio, Buenos Aires, The Pampas, C1043
The Buenos Aires Obelisk (Obelisco de Buenos Aires), among the city’s most iconic landmarks, towers over the intersection of two main thoroughfares. Erected in 1936 to commemorate the quadricentennial of the city’s founding, the pencil-like column stands a striking 220 feet (67 meters) tall and marks the spot where the nation’s flag was first flown.
The Basics
It would be difficult to miss this Buenos Aires landmark, especially given its prominent location at a major crossroads in the heart of the city. Not only an important navigational landmark, the obelisk is also at the center of city celebrations and rallies, a common backdrop for sporting celebrations, political demonstrations, candlelit vigils, and religious gatherings. Just about every city sightseeing tour stops for a photo op at the monument, along with other notable attractions such as Plaza de Mayo, Puerto Madero, and La Bombonera football stadium.
Things to Know Before You Go
An icon of Buenos Aires, the obelisk is a must-see for first-time visitors.
Bring along some sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat if you plan to spend time at the obelisk, as it offers little shade.
Don’t forget your camera; the obelisk makes for an excellent photo op.
How to Get There
Three major subway lines converge beneath the obelisk, making it easy to reach by public transportation. To get there, take the subway to Carlos Pellegrini, Diagonal Norte, or 9 de Julio.
When to Get There
There isn’t really a bad time to visit the monument, though the best photo opportunities come early in the morning when the sun is rising, in the evening around sunset, or when the obelisk is illuminated after dark.
Construction of the Obelisk
Fashioned from 15 square feet (1,360 square meters) of Cordoba white stone, the obelisk was designed by Tucumán architect Alberto Prebisch and features poignant inscriptions on each of its four faces, referencing key moments in the city’s history.
