Nuuanu Valley Rain Forest
Honolulu, Oahu, Oahu, HI, 96744
Visitors to Honolulu don’t have to journey far to immerse themselves in one of Hawaii’s highlight tropical rainforests. The Nuuanu Valley Rainforest is a place of lush greenery and rich biodiversity. Hiking trails lead up to the Nuuanu Pali Lookout—whose views stretch to the Pacific Ocean—and the rainforest can also be reached by car or bike.
The basics
Hawaii is the only US state that boasts its own tropical rainforests, and getting out in nature is a must during any getaway. For visitors to Honolulu, the Nuuanu Valley Rainforest is one of the most accessible from the Hawaiian capital. Although the time-pressed can admire its giant bamboo and liana vines during a drive or bike ride, it’s also worth discovering hiking routes like the Judd Memorial Trail, part of the Mauka Trail System. Threading through streams and pine forests, the trail culminates with the 1,000-foot (305-meter) Nuuanu Pali Lookout, which offers sweeping views of Oahu’s Windward Coast.
The Nuuanu Valley Rainforest is close enough to the city to visit independently, and guided tours offer another convenient way to visit. Book a group hike for hands-on guidance, or see a new view of the region aboard a sightseeing helicopter flight.
Things to know before you go
If you plan to hike, come prepared with durable, waterproof hiking shoes to handle area trails’ streams and mud.
Don’t forget your bug spray, sunscreen, hats—and rain gear (this is a rainforest, after all).
The Judd Memorial Trail leads to the amusingly named Jackass Ginger Pool, where you can take a dip if you come prepared with a bathing suit and towel.
The Nuuanu Pali Lookout is known for its gusts; hang on to your hats and sunglasses.
How to get there
The Nuuanu Valley Rainforest is roughly 4 miles (6 kilometers) from Honolulu. To get there by car, take the Old Nuuanu Pali Road exit off the Pali Highway (Highway 61); local buses, including the 65, 66, and 67, also serve the area. You can admire its scenery by car, but it’s worth immersing yourself in nature on a hike.
When to get there
The Nuuanu Valley Rainforest is a popular destination throughout the year, but to make the most of its scenery, avoid the rainy season (which lasts from roughly November through March). If you plan to hike, be sure to constrain your visit to daylight hours.
Manoa Valley
After you’ve explored the Nuuanu Valley, continue your adventures in Oahu’s nearby Manoa Valley. Boasting waterfalls, numerous birds and other wildlife species, and Hollywood history (the area was a filming location for various blockbusters, including Jurassic Park), it’s another excellent destination for active travelers looking to immerse themselves in nature.
