POINT OF INTEREST

Museum Jorge Rando (Museo Jorge Rando)

Calle Cruz del Molinillo 12, Malaga, Andalucia, 29013

Museum Jorge Rando (Museo Jorge Rando) is housed in the former cloister of the Monastery of the Mercedarians. The first and only Expressionist museum in Spain, its permanent collection features the bold, fluid works of Málaga-born painter Jorge Rando. The gallery also functions as a studio for local artists, a cultural center, and a research facility.

The basics

Jorge Rando’s vast canvases are on display in the museum's white galleries, lit from above by skylights. Alongside his paintings, temporary exhibitions of work by other Expressionists, including sculptures by German artist Ernst Barlach, change roughly every six months. You can find more sculptures in the museum’s small central courtyard, dominated by an ancient orange tree and a pink, life-size figure of a pregnant woman. Along with free guided tours, Museum Jorge Rando offers art movies, lectures, and the chance to peek into the ateliers of the artists working there.

Things to know before you go

  • You can visit the museum independently, with the support of guidebooks or supplementary information available at the museum.

  • The museum is adapted for people with mobility problems; there are elevators and accessible restrooms.

  • Admission is free.

How to get there

Museum Jorge Rando is located just outside Málaga’s historical center, about a 10-minute walk from the city's major shopping thoroughfare, Larios Street. By public transit, you can reach it via train lines C1 and C2 or bus routes 1, 2, 6, 26, 30, and 36. Other transport options include biking and calling a cab or rideshare.

When to get there

The museum is open Monday to Friday, from mid-morning to late evening, with a 2-hour lunch break in the afternoon. It is open on Saturdays and select days throughout the year from mid-morning to early afternoon. There are extended hours in the summer (June 1 to September 30). It is closed on Sundays and major public holidays.

Museum of Glass and Crystal (Museo del Vidrio y Cristal)

About a 5-minute walk from Museum Jorge Rando, you’ll find the Museum of Glass and Crystal, a decorative arts museum furnished like a home with antique sofas, rugs, mirrors, and paintings. Visitors can see a range of glass pieces, including pre-Raphaelite, stained-glass windows, brightly colored Phoenician pieces, and 20th-century Lalique and Whitefriars glass.
