Miniatur Wunderland

Kehrwieder 2/Block D, Hamburg, DEU

Opened in 2001, Hamburg’s Miniatur Wunderland holds the Guinness World Record for the largest model railway. One of Germany’s most popular tourist attractions, the vast landmark encompasses more than 1,000 trains, as well as myriad model airplanes, cruise ships, and other vehicles.

Situated in a historic warehouse in Hamburg’s UNESCO-listed Speicherstadt district, Miniatur Wunderland took more than 17 years to construct. The expansive, highly detailed display areas—including Central Germany, Knuffingen (a fictional German town), Austria, Hamburg, America, Scandinavia, Switzerland, and Italy—are works of art. In addition to tableaus from everyday life, the railroad includes scenes from Star Wars, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Superman, and other fictional worlds. To learn more about how the installations are made, you can visit the artisans in their studios.

Save time at the entrance by booking your ticket online in advance. Alternatively, enjoy a guided, personalized experience when you stop by as part of a private city tour. The Hamburg Card also includes admission to Miniatur Wunderland.

  • Miniatur Wunderland has restrooms, comfortable seats, a play area, and other amenities.
  • Miniatur Wunderland is fully accessible to wheelchairs, and hosts Wheelchair Mondays every month or two.
  • Children under 3 feet (1 meter) tall receive free entry, while those under age 16 get a 50 percent discount.
  • Try the currywurst at the on-site bistro.

Miniatur Wunderland is easy to get to by public transit. Take U-Bahn (subway) line U3 to Baumwall, U1 to Messberg, or U4 to Überseequartier. Alternatively, take S-Bahn (over-ground train) line S1 or S3 to Stadthausbrücke, or hop on bus #6. Taxis are also plentiful.

Miniatur Wunderland is typically open every day, all year round, often with extended hours on weekends, and during school holidays. For fewer crowds, go on a weekday or get there early.

To complement its installations, Miniatur Wunderland hosts a regular series of recurring events. Wunderland at Night, for example, lets you see a new side of the models and explore after normal visiting hours. Or, sign up for Culinary Trip Around the World, which offers tastings of a range of dishes corresponding to the geographical display areas.
