Regent Theatre has been one of Melbourne’s most important performance venues since 1929. The lavishly designed 2,145-seat auditorium has hosted some of the city’s most popular plays and musicals over the years, including The Lion King, Wicked, We Will Rock You, and the world premiere of King Kong.

From classics such as West Side Story and Cats to modern favorites such as Billy Elliot the Musical and War Horse, and even hosting part of the Melbourne Comedy Festival, there’s a constantly changing roster of shows at the Melbourne Regent Theatre. Performances take place in the main theater, where the gold-trimmed decor, original chandeliers, and plush velvet drapes all add to the atmosphere. The Plaza Ballroom downstairs also hosts regular concerts and events.

Regent Theatre is located on Collins Street in the heart of downtown Melbourne. The venue is easily reached on foot from central attractions—it’s about a 5-minute walk from Federation Square. The closest train station is Flinders Street and tram stop is Swanston Street and Flinders Street, both just a 2-minute walk from the theater.
When to get there
Performances are held Tuesday through Sunday evenings, with matinees on Wednesdays and weekends. Admission to the auditorium opens 1 hour before showtime; plan ahead to arrive in advance and settle in.
