Megalo Kavouri

Vouliagmeni, Greece, 166 71

Located just 12 miles (19 km from Athens, Megalo Kavouri is one of the most easily accessible beaches for a quick break from the bustle of the city. With both sandy and pebble areas, a number of beach clubs, and waterfront restaurants and cafés, this popular stretch of coastline has all you need for a day of sunbathing and swimming.

The basics

Megalo Kavouri, which means big crab, is one of the two main beaches in the coastal town of Vouliagmeni—the second beach is called Mikro Kavouri—and both are consistently awarded the EU blue flags for environmental excellence. The beach is a popular choice for swimming and water activities in the large shallow cove, as well as sunbathing and beach volleyball and other sports on the wide stretch of sand. The roads near the beach are lined with palm trees, providing welcome shade in the hot summer months. With beach facilities that rent lounge chairs and umbrellas, and restaurants, cafes, and fish taverns that serve local Greek cuisine located nearby, it’s easy to make a day of it. To explore further along the riviera, join a TRIKKE (electric tricycle) tour to zip down the coastline and take in its highlights without getting footsore.

Things to know before you go

  • A day al Megalo Kavouri is a fun break for families who need respite from the heat and crowds in Athens.
  • Beach clubs rent sun umbrellas and lounge chairs but you will need to bring your own swimsuit and towel. There are a number of shops in Vouliagmeni that sell beach items.
  • Not all beach clubs are accessible to wheelchairs and strollers; check in advance.
  • There are free public areas of the beach where you can relax without renting chairs and umbrellas. Keep in mind that it can get very hot under the sun in the summer months, and be sure to wear sunblock.
