You can reach Makam di Luba via a series of wooden boardwalks that cross the Brunei River. The memorial is a small attraction that typically only takes around 15 minutes to explore, so you’re best visiting during a wildlife-watching tour by boat. These excursions increase your chances of spotting endemic proboscis monkeys, which you can find in the wild on the island of Borneo.

• There’s little information here, so it’s best to visit with a guide if you want to delve deeper into the cultural significance of the mausoleum.

• Stairs and uneven surfaces mean that Makam di Luba is difficult to explore in wheelchairs or strollers.

• Wear plenty of insect repellant: Makam di Luba is a mosquito hot spot, thanks to its location in the mangroves.

How to get there

Makam di Luba is only accessible by boat and you can visit with a tour that includes transport or by water taxi. You can book a water taxi from the main jetty in Bandar Seri Begawan; make sure you agree on a price before you set off and you have cash in small denominations.

When to get there

Makam di Luba is technically always open, but the only time worth visiting is during daylight hours. Brunei’s dry season runs from March through September, which is the best time to explore attractions in the capital. The wettest months are from October to February when visiting the island can be difficult.
