Mainkai

Frankfurt, Germany

A promenade along the River Main in Frankfurt, Mainkai offers views of the city’s skyscrapers, bridges, and other sights. Locals come here to walk dogs and go for strolls and bike rides; you can also have a picnic and check out the lovely gardens. One of the top seasonal attractions here is an outdoor Christmas market that brings stalls of gifts and souvenirs to Mainkai.

The basics

While Frankfurt is often associated with its skyscrapers, the city is also home to several green spaces like Mainkai. This promenade offers views of the River Main and is a free space to stroll, jog, or soak up the sun. Many visitors spend an hour or two walking or picnicking, and some combine a stop at Mainkai with a scenic boat tour on the river. One of the most popular times for a river cruise is sunset, which offers the best of both the day and evening hours.

Things to know before you go

  • Mainkai is ideal for fitness enthusiasts and families seeking outdoor space.
  • This riverside promenade is flat and accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.
  • This public green space is free and open to all.
  • Mainkai offers easy access to bridges and further exploring in Frankfurt.

How to get there

Mainkai is set on the River Main between two bridges (Alte Brucke and Untermainbrucke) in the heart of Frankfurt. To reach it, take the subway to the Frankfurt (Main) Willy-Brandt-Platz stop. Parking nearby is limited; one public parking garage option is located across the river at Parkhaus Alt-Sachsenhausen. Many people also go to Mainkai by bike.

When to get there

Mainkai is popular throughout the year, especially during good weather. While many travelers come here in December to check out the local Christmas markets, the warm summer months are an equally attractive time to relax over a picnic on the promenade. For a peaceful experience, go for a walk or a jog first thing in the morning.

Frankfurt’s holiday markets

Germany is well known for the glow and festivity of its annual holiday markets, and Frankfurt is no exception. The city has several Christmas markets to offer, including one that sets up along Mainkai, and they’re typically open daily in the lead-up to Christmas, offering a range of crafts, gifts, and German souvenirs, plus food and drinks. Some of the most popular markets beyond Mainkai include Romerberg, Paulsplatz, and Hauptwache Market.
