Longwood (Nutt’s Folly)
140 Lower Woodville Rd, Natchez, MS, 39120
Longwood is a historic mansion in Natchez and the country's largest octagonal house. It’s also referred to as Nutt’s Folly, attributed to its original owner, Haller Nutt, who unluckily found his mansion’s upper floors unfinished when his builders returned north in the build-up to the Civil War. This unfinished mansion is still prized and is open today for tours.
The basics
As a National Historic Landmark and one of the Natchez Pilgrimage Garden Club properties, apart from the first floor, all five upper floors remain unfinished, their contrast making it one of the most visited attractions in the city. The architecture style is a variation of Moslem/Oriental Revival Residence, and the house was constructed by enslaved people and craftsmen. As you tour the former home, you’ll see that only nine of the planned 32 rooms were finished.
Things to know before you go
You can only tour the bottom floor.
The Nutt’s family cemetery is on the property.
Children 12 and under are free.
