POINT OF INTEREST

Les Baux-de-Provence

Baux-de-Provence, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, 13520

Perched on top of a huge rock, Les Baux-de-Provence is one of France’s most beautiful villages—and one of the region’s most popular destinations. Aside from the impressive location and panoramic views, visitors to the village can enjoy the unique Carrières des Lumières art installation, where images of famous artworks and photography are projected onto sheer walls of rock.

The basics

In French, baux (or baou in the Provencal dialect) is a rocky outcrop—a fitting name for this village. To make the view even more spectacular, the town is crowned with the ruins of a castle that dates from the 13th century. Though the upper town has only 20 or so year-round residents, over 1.5 million visitors travel to to Les Baux annually to soak in its scenic atmosphere and explore its many historic buildings. For greater insight into the history of the village, join a guided walking or biking tour. The town is often included on private tours that cover the highlights of Provence.

Things to know before you go

  • The castle has narrow pathways and may not be suitable for people with limited mobility.
  • If you’re planning to visit Carrières des Lumières, consider booking tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.
  • Les Baux is close to Avignon, so it’s possible to visit both places in one day.
  • The aluminum ore Bauxite was first discovered in this village in 1821.

How to get there

Les Baux-de-Provence is halfway between Arles and Avignon in northern Provence. Regional buses connect all three places. Alternatively, you can travel by car or join a guided tour that also includes transport.

When to get there

Les Baux welcomes over a million tourists a year, which means that the small village is often busy, especially during the height of summer. Consider visiting outside of high season or planning to arrive early to beat the crowds.

Walking in Van Gogh’s footsteps in Arles

Located a 30-minute drive away, the historic town of Arles has plenty of attractions, such as a Roman amphitheater almost as impressive as the Colosseum and Camargue Regional Natural Park with its flamingos. However, Arles is best known for being Van Gogh's home for a little over a year in 1888. He painted some of his most iconic works here, including Bedroom in Arles and Café Terrace at Night.
