Kuhio Beach
2453 Kalākaua Ave, Honolulu, HI, 96815
In the heart of Waikiki, Kuhio Beach has long been a favorite among travelers looking for gentle waters and powdery sands. The beach is partially walled off, which keeps some of the swells at bay, so you’re more likely to see families with small kids here than surfers looking to catch a wave.
The basics
Because of its generally calm waters and easy access to area hotels, Kuhio Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Waikiki. Many people visit it independently, but some walking tours of Waikiki also pass by the beach; tours from Waikiki to Diamond Head typically drive past it, as do some full-day island tours that circle Oahu, depending on their routing.
Things to know before you go
Kuhio Beach is a top choice for families looking for a calm place to swim or wade.
The beach has lifeguards, and facilities include on-site parking and showers.
Beach access mats for wheelchair users are available.
How to get there
Kuhio Beach is located in Waikiki right off Kalakaua Avenue, on the opposite side of the Waikiki Walkway from Queens Beach. The bus stop at Kalakaua Avenue and Opp Uluniu Avenue (stop 4349) is right by the northern end of the beach, connecting it to other parts of Honolulu and beyond.
When to get there
The beach is a great place to visit any time of day or night, but expect crowds if you come during one of the peak seasons (June–August and mid-December–early January). Hula shows are sometimes staged here on winter evenings. If you do happen to be in town during a busy time of year, visit earlier in the day for fewer crowds.
Things to do near Kuhio Beach
Many of Honolulu's top attractions are within easy walking distance of Kuhio Beach. Spots worth visiting with kids include the Honolulu Zoo and the Waikiki Aquarium, as well as the sprawling grounds of the adjacent Kapi'olani Regional Park. For an invigorating hike and great views, head to Diamond Head, a 10-minute walk away.
