Kizlaragasi Han Bazaar
Tarihi Kızlarağası Hanı Han Yönetimi 871, Izmir, Turkey, 35250
Originally founded in the 18th century as a roadside resting place for travelers, this covered Ottoman structure is now a bustling marketplace—and one of Izmir’s top historic attractions. A smaller version of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, Kizlaragasi Han has everything from fresh produce and cheeses to ceramic plates and leather bags. You’ll also find traditional restaurants serving a variety of local dishes.
The basics
The historic Kizlaragasi Han Bazaar caters to locals more than tourists, which gives it a lived-in feel and keeps prices budget-friendly. The bazaar is often included as a stop on half- and full-day Izmir sightseeing tours, alongside attractions like the historic Clock Tower and panoramic views from Pagos Hill. It’s also easy to stop by the marketplace on your own, though a guide is recommended to navigate the goods for sale, especially if you’d like some help with bargaining.
Things to know before you go
The bazaar is huge, and you can easily spend several hours here, if not longer. Even if you’re not shopping , this is a great spot to grab a Turkish coffee and people-watch. Some vendors or restaurant workers might seem persistent in capturing your attention. A firm hayır, teşekkürler (“no, thanks”) is usually enough to show you’re not interested.
How to get there
Kizlaragasi Han Bazaar can be easily reached by either taxi, rideshare, or public transportation. By tram, take the Konak Line to Konak station, then walk 5-10 minutes to the bazaar. The metro line M1 also stops at Konak, as well as several city buses. The marketplace is close to Izmir Clock Tower and Hisar Mosque, making it easy to cover multiple attractions on foot in the Kizlaragasi neighborhood.
When to get there
If you’re hoping for a quieter experience, aim for the morning when many shops have just opened—this is also a cooler weather window, if you’re visiting in the summer. Late afternoon is another option, though note that vendors start closing by the early evening; afternoon and around midday tend to be busiest. During Ramadan and other holidays, the marketplace keeps different hours. Avoid Fridays, as businesses often close for Muslim prayers.
Other Ottoman-era attractions in Izmir
Another historic caravanserai near the bazaar, Abacıoğlu Han was built in the 18th century and has been painstakingly restored, so it’s a great place to see traditional Ottoman architecture. Don’t miss Hisar Mosque, built at the end of the 16th century, which is still used for daily prayers, or Konak Mosque, built a century later and located near the Clock Tower.
