Kampong Sungai Bunga

Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei

Rooted in Brunei’s age-old traditions, Kampong Sungai Bunga is a world away from the opulence of Bandar Seri Begawan. This modern water village features recently renovated houses on stilts, and offers insight into the unique water-based cultures of Brunei’s capital. You can only reach Kampong Sungai Bunga by boat, as it’s seven miles (11 kilometers) from the center.

The basics

Kampong Sungai Bunga is featured on some Bandar Seri Begawan sightseeing tours, as it’s an important aspect of the capital’s cultural heritage. These tours often combine it with attractions such as the golden Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque and the Royal Regalia Museum. Some village-specific tours organize interactions with locals and let you see how villagers make traditional food.

Things to know before you go

You’ll likely have to climb a ladder to disembark from the boat onto a wooden boardwalk, which might pose a problem for travelers with limited mobility. You can stay overnight at the water village at one of the homestay accommodation options. Bring cash in small denominations in case you want to buy a snack or drink from a local vendor.

How to get there

You can only reach Kampong Sungai Bunga by boat. Take a water taxi from the Waterfront Jetty (Yayasan Jetty) in Bandar Seri Begawan, which takes around 15 minutes, or book a tour that includes transportation.

When to get there

The best time to visit Kampong Sungai Bunga is during the day, either in the morning or late afternoon, after the heat has reached its peak. Most travelers find that around one hour is enough time to explore the entire village. Brunei’s dry season, from January to May, is the best time to visit.

What food to try in Kampong Sungai Bunga

Kampong Sungai Bunga is a great place to try some traditional Brunei cooking, which differs greatly from the rest of Southeast Asia. The primary staple is ambuyat, a starchy substance derived from sago palm and similar to tapioca starch. It’s often eaten with spicy sambal sauces and fresh vegetables.
