Located in downtown Phoenix, the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix offers a tranquil setting with hand-picked rock, stone footbridges, and lanterns, along with more than 85 varieties of plants, plus a traditional tea house. It has a miegakure or hide-and-reveal design prevalent in Japanese stroll gardens. Visitors are led to uncover hidden sights and sounds of the landscape while strolling.

The basics

Join a walk-in tour at the Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix, led by one of the docent guides, to better understand the space. As you wander along the pathways, take in the flowing streams, a 14-foot (4.3-meter) waterfall, and a Koi pond. Guests can also join a docent-led tea tour and learn the basics of Japanese casual tea, followed by a tea-tasting service. The garden also hosts various annual events and programs throughout the year.

How to get there

The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix is conveniently located in the city's center by route 10. There is free parking on site. You can also take Valley Metro Rail, exiting at the Central Avenue and Roosevelt stop, a short walk from the garden. Bus route 0 also stops near the garden.

When to get there

The Japanese Friendship Garden of Phoenix is open Tuesday through Sunday, with the last admission happening 30 minutes before closing. The tea house is open monthly ​​for public tea (October through June) by reservation only. The guided garden tours last 30-40 minutes, while the tea tours last an hour. There are no tea tours from July through September.
