Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús

Caseros 52, Córdoba, Argentina

Renowned for its architectural fusion, the 17th-century Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Córdoba. Said to be the oldest church in the city, it is most notable for the shape of its vault, which was designed by its boat-builder architect to resemble an inverted ship’s hull.

The basics

While the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús has a humble Romanesque facade typical of Latin American churches, its interior favors extravagance. Shining Paraguayan cedar wood gleams above a richly gilded, baroque altarpiece displaying statues of religious figures. You can explore the church independently or as part of a walking tour of Córdoba, which usually combines it with other religious highlights on the Manzana Jesuítica (Jesuit Block).

Things to know before you go

  • The church is an active place of worship, so dress appropriately and keep noise to a minimum.

  • Ramps make Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús wheelchair and stroller accessible.

  • While the church doesn’t have air conditioning, its cool interior is a great place to escape the midday heat during the warmer months.

How to get there

The Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús is in the center of Córdoba. You can take the 30, 32, or 35 bus to the stop just a couple of minutes from the church. Córdoba doesn’t have a metro system, but rideshare apps such as Uber are widely available.

When to get there

The church is open Monday–Friday from morning until lunchtime, when it closes for a few hours and reopens for the evening hours. On Saturday, it’s open from morning to early afternoon and on Sunday, four Mass services take place throughout the day. The church hosts special religious services on Catholic holidays such as Easter and Christmas.

More religious architecture in Córdoba

The Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús isn’t the only church in Córdoba worth a visit; in fact, the city is famous for its UNESCO–listed Manzana Jesuítica complex, notable for its architecture and cultural complexity. Córdoba Cathedral is another spectacular structure, crowned by a Romanesque dome.
