Hunting Island State Park
Beaufort, South Carolina
Hunting Island State Park covers 5,000 acres (2,023 hectares) of lowland on South Carolina’s Atlantic coast. A mix of marsh and maritime forest join an ocean inlet, saltwater lagoon, and 5 miles (8 kilometers) of beachfront to create a haven for nature and nature lovers alike. The park features a nature center, visitor center, fishing pier, and a lighthouse built in 1875.
The basics
Hunting Island State Park is large enough to spend the weekend exploring, yet small enough to thoroughly enjoy a day trip. The nature center has exhibits and scheduled events open to the public. The beach, playground, and picnic areas make for a great family-friendly afternoon, while those who are hoping to stay longer will find more than 100 standard and rustic camping sites. Fishing rods and reels are available to rent at the nature center.
Things to know before you go
Dogs are allowed in the outdoor spaces, but not in the visitor center, nature center, cabins, or lighthouse.
Camping requires a minimum 2-night reservation.
Only North Beach has lifeguards during the summer months.
You’ll need a South Carolina fishing license to fish anywhere except the fishing pier.
There are geocaches on the island, as well as a pressed-penny treasure hunt for children to find.
How to get there
Taking Highway 21 east to Sea Island Parkway is the only way to access Hunting Island State Park by car. The Huntington Island Lighthouse is located at 2555 Sea Island Parkway, approximately a half-hour’s drive from Beaufort. You can get a taxi or rideshare out to the park, but because of its remote location, you should prearrange your return trip before your visit.
When to get there
Hunting Island State Park is one of the most popular natural places to visit in South Carolina, seeing over a million visitors each year which far exceeds that of Congaree National Park. Summer is the busiest time of the year for swimming, while spring is one of the busiest times for RVing. Plan your visit around the seasons and the sunlight, and choose winter for a crowd-free visit.
Fripp Island makes for a convenient stay
If you follow the Sea Island Parkway beyond the Hunting Island State Park Nature Center, you’ll cross the water and enter Fripp Island. This small area has a few hotels, restaurants, hiking trails, and a golf course. It’s a convenient place to stay as close as possible to Hunting Island State Park without camping or staying in an RV.
